Sell adverts via Broadstreet Ads – The easy way!

BroadStreet LogoA few weeks ago I was approached by Kenny Katzgrau who runs and co-founded Broadstreet.
Broadstreet bridges a gap between customization and management where Publishers can allow Advertisers to easily and quite effortlessly configure and customize their adverts at any time from anywhere.

Broadstreet currently does business with hundreds of Publishers and Advertisers in the United States, Europe and some in Asia. Kenny from Broadstreet proposed a sort of co-operation where their Advertisement system would integrate with AdRotate to accommodate their current and future users better. Since a lot of them already use AdRotate it would make sense to team up with me and integrate the two. And so we did!

So what does this mean for you

You as a publisher can create adverts through the Broadstreet system directly from the AdRotate Dashboard and empower your advertisers to fill in the blanks to keep their advert up-to-date via various online media services. This has been tested to work and turned out quite popular, too.

Imagine a restaurant owner who quickly wants to advertise the daily special. Or perhaps a store or business who regularly change their adverts for all kinds of products they offer. Organizing events becomes easy to promote with adverts that are quickly and easy to update with better or more information as it comes available.

Code generated through the Broadstreet system is easy to handle and use and suits the AdRotate Plugin perfectly.

A real advert as example:
Ox Cart Tavern

The text in the center of this advert can be changed and updated by your advertiser without you having to update the advert. This saves you time. And gives your advertiser a good amount of freedom to promote their products! Of course you can choose certain styles and coloring when creating the advert.

Available how and when?

The Broadstreet integration will be available as a feature in both AdRotate and AdRotate Pro. Testing is in the final stages and we’re expecting to release updates very soon. Check out Broadstreets website for more details on what they do and how they will help you.

AdRotate 3.8.3.4 and AdRotate Pro 3.8.3.4

And before I pop off to bed -

Some people reported that group creation broke. Somehow the code to add the wrapper to the database got lost. I need a break I think, making stupid mistakes like that.

Anyway, this patch fixes it. Also to avoid future confusion and complaints from Automattic who suddenly feel I don’t follow their plugin guidelines or whatever. The link/credit thingy has been removed from the plugin.

Changelog:

  • [fix] Group creation and editing (pro)
  • [change] “I’m using AdRotate” removed from plugin to conform with guidelines

Get it! get it!

Free users – Your patch has been submitted for review. Automattic is very picky. This might take a while.
Pro users – You can download the update from your account right now.

AdRotate Pro 3.8.3.3

Another small bugfix release and 2 new thingies.

Changelog:

  • [fix] Inactive adverts ending up in wrong list on dashboard
  • [fix] Roles not cleaned properly on deactivation
  • [fix] Improper use if ‘id’ attribute in blocks
  • [fix] Version inconsistency for new AdRotate Pro installations (would affect future updates)
  • [new] Request support straight from your dashboard
  • [new] Improved wrapper functions for groups

Oh yes! Finally. People have been requesting this for some time. A wrapper function for groups! :)
The wrapper is applied on group implementations and will be ignored when the group is used in a block – So be careful. But then, blocks have their own wrapper.

But what’s more. I had set out to support Pro users via tickets. Not the forum. Obviously you can post all you want on the forum. But to set Pro apart from the Free version I had decided early on that everyone would get premium support. Somewhere along the line this idea got changed and removed from the Pro Single License but recent developments made me reverse that. So everyone who bought pro can have Premium support.

This can be usage questions. More involved problems. Doesn’t matter. Just let me know. And you can do so right from your dashboard. You’ll find a new menu item under “AdRotate” where you can get in touch. This will create a ticket in my ticket system on www.ajdg.net where you get the attention you need.

Where to get it!

You can download the new version from your account on this website. Upgrade instructions are included in the zip file in the readme.html.

Felici Child-Theme updated

Earlier this week I’ve updated the Felici Child-Theme with more locations and better integration into the Parent Felici Theme.

New options are better integration for the front page widgets created by the Hades Framework. These are now not just added to the page but to the actual widget.

People who bought it can download the new version from their account.
Prospecting buyers can find the theme in the store: www.adrotateplugin.com/shop/category/child-themes/

AdRotate 3.8.3 – Fixes failed upgrades – Blocks

Broken Upgrade script:

Turns out the WordPress Upgrade process doesn’t trigger a certain hook required in AdRotate to upgrade databases. Yay WordPress! This took me hours to find… But I’ve added another check and thingy and some technical shizzle wizzle to make it work. And that should be the end of it.

I have tested this at least a dozen times on semi-live sites to upgrade actual data from AdRotate 3.7.4.x, 3.8, 3.8.2 to 3.8.3. Not a single error has occurred. I have asked various people to check if 3.8.3 works for them most came back with positive results. One didn’t but I strongly doubt that was because of AdRotate, based on his feedback.

Blocks:

Additionally, I wasn’t happy with Blocks and how they render their CSS. Some people noticed this too. So I’ve reverted blocks to the old code model. *but*… No more inline CSS. That should please a few. Each block now has it’s sizes and some small options defined in *actual* CSS, which is dynamically created and inserted into the head of the site. So no more screwed up sidebars because the CSS was crammed somewhere in between.

Additionally. You can further customize the sidebars looks by defining “.block_outer” and “.block_inner” in your CSS stylesheets. By defining the block_outer class you’ll change the entire block. And block_inner is for each advert within that block. For example to apply a margin, border, or whatever tickles your fancy! Just keep in mind that the size of things is defined automatically. So ideally these classes should be used for visual purposes only.

Changelog:

  • [fix] Core: Upgrade script not always triggered
  • [change] Blocks: Better CSS handling for blocks

Possible cave-ats:

  1. If ads are still showing as erroneous - refresh the cache by clicking “re-evaluate all ads” in settings.
  2. You might need to click “clean up database” or “optimize database” in settings if some ads show up incorrectly in the dashboard.

Download:

Pro users – The download is available right now in your account. Upgrade instructions are included in the readme.html inside the zip file.

Free users - Either wait for the automated update or go here.

AdRotate 3.8.2 & AdRotate Pro 3.8.2

And so… More fixes. Several users other than have tested this version and confirmed it indeed works. Thanks to all of you for your useful reports and feedback. I can’t find more quirks, no more reports are coming in… This must be it. I hope :)

Changelog:

  • [fix] Core: Undefined strings in shortcodes
  • [fix] Blocks: Shuffle expecting array in blocks
  • [fix] Blocks: Rows and columns now in the right order
  • [fix] Blocks: Missing <div> in blocks
  • [fix] Maintenance: No longer checks for Ad rates (free only)
  • [fix] Ad Creation: Date selection and definition for new ads and editing them (free only)

Get! get! get!

AdRotate is available (or should be shortly) from your dashboard. – Or via manual download.
AdRotate Pro is available from your account on this website.

Possible Cave-ats:

Because of a number of changes you might run into the following. This was unavoidable.

  1. (Pro users) Images are saved differently. If you end up with ads without images, edit each ad, select it’s image and the correct path will be saved again.
  2. If all ads say something is wrong but nothing is wrong. Go into settings and click “re-evaluate all ads” under Maintenance.
  3. If your block is misaligned or shows the wrong amount of rows/columns. Verify and correct this for every block.
  4. If AdRotate complains about “wp_adrotate_stats” not being available. Rename the table manually from PHPMyAdmin. Use the below query -

[cc lang="sql"]RENAME TABLE `wp_adrotate_stats_tracker` TO `wp_adrotate_stats`;[/cc]

What went wrong?

Various changes in AdRotate Pro which reflected bad on AdRotate and caused some issues. Somehow these didn’t appear in my test server.

So somehow all my testing, again, wasn’t enough. But then again. Trying to get a small group of users together who test and provide useful feedback seems impossible too. I’ve tried it several times now. People happily download and use the beta’s but I never hear anything from them. Hmm. A combination of things.
