AdRotate Free 3.8.4.3

Just out, including some bugfixes and stuff.

With the help of Beee an issue got fixed with image paths for set ups in subfolders. Steveh (Sorry, no link), kindly supplied a patch to improve Caching support. This should now actually work as intended. Let me know how that goes. Mauro L. from 7Host pointed out a small issue with the user roles.

Changelog

Upgrade

The update is available now and will be pushed out to websites in the coming days.

Releases/Updates

The free version will for the most part be released independently from AdRotate Pro. Development of AdRotate Pro takes more time and effort than keeping the Free version up-to-date. But Also to keep things simpler. No confusing changelogs and feature announcements.

It’s been a weird year, but exciting, too. Hundreds of people have benefited from my services in the past year. Most of them were happy and satisfied with what I did for them too. Which is awesome. And it’s been more fun than I’d hoped for. Finding new people to talk to. Making acquaintances and contacts. Sharpening my skills and insights as I go along. It’s been an incredible year for learning new things. Learning how to run a business, spotting the opportunities and how to use them. And this is only the beginning I hope :) .

Blocks have no future

While working on my OmniCard plugin and KeyGenerator plugin for WooCommerce I suddenly had an idea for AdRotate. Those 2 plugins are designed from the ground up to be easy to use and super simple to understand with *everything* they do. Literally everything;

  • The KeyGenerator plugin has 1 button and does 1 thing. Generate license keys. No settings no technical shit. Just a button. It can’t be simpler.
  • OmniCard has just over 10 options and with that the most flexibility of any payment gateway, but it’s so simple to control even the biggest of bigger idiots can use it.

AdRotate Blocks is not like that anymore. It has bolted on fields and options. People often misunderstand the actual idea of blocks and use it in the wrong way. This means that I did something wrong with Blocks. I’m not entirely sure what. But if the feature no longer makes sense to people or to me, something is wrong.

Therefor I came to the very unsophisticated conclusion that blocks as a feature no longer has a place in the vision of AdRotate. It has to go. Be removed and destroyed! Restore the simplicity. I firmly believe it is a waste of time to further develop and fix the blocks as they are now.

Outrage!

Nope! While the Block as a feature has no place in the idea of AdRotate the idea of blocks must remain. This is a very important change for the future of AdRotate. Ultimately it will make things better and simpler for everyone.

With the introduction of blocks they worked sort of like a group but with multiple ads. Their special purpose would be to generate a grid and show ads in a special way. Awesome! Perfect for the then new and hip 125*125 ads. Now, 3 years or so later, the functionality of blocks eludes me.

The idea was a layered approach, Ads go into groups, groups go into blocks and they would all work together and everyone would be happy. It doesn’t quite work as I want it to and I generally dislike how blocks turned out overall.

Solutions!

Yep! Groups have a future. And all they need is some love and a grid option. Yes, a grid. So you can still make blocks. Except it’s a group. Less layers, less clutter. Which means less confusion and greater ease of use. Oh imagine the joy … :)

So the very top of my Todo list now looks like this;

Blast from the past

Posted on my blog Meandmymac.net on May 24th, 2008. The very first post about AdRotate, right after I decided to make it a public plugin.

AdRotate v0.2

Oooh yes, so someone tricked me into making a simple ad rotation plugin for wordpress.
I churned up some code and presto! We have another plugin for WordPress.

It sports a textfield, a simple management page and some simple options per ad, like if the ad should be activated or not. And with the simple inclusion of a function call in the template (or multiple, if you want more than one banner). You can easily show banners on your site.

As with most plugins this also comes with basic support. I will ad a support page soon.

AdRotate 3.8.1 – Fixes!

After a few hours of frantic code staring, pizza and way too much cola. Behold!

I have worked through all of your emails, comments and forum posts. I think I squashed all reported issues. Which came down to a version increment mismatch for most issues.

Changelog:

  • [fix] Unserialized warning on some dashboards
  • [fix] Empty Objects for disabled adverts
  • [fix] Empty Objects for the AdRotate info dashboard
  • [fix] Block sizes incorrectly calculated
  • [fix] Ads showing up as expired while they’re not
  • [fix] Too much ads per block
  • [fix] Disappeared ads

Turns out, despite endless testing, that it was not enough. The version increment on the database which I believed was version 20 and onwards turned out wrong.

- A lot of users somehow had AdRotate database version 22 (how?) Thus a few upgrades for the database were not ran. I have moved these changes to version 26 which will correct the missing pieces.

- Blocks had a tiny overhaul to now properly count the amount of adverts.

- Some random typos corrected which fixes; Errors about unserialized data, restores click tracking, makes disabled adverts show up properly.

Typos? Yea… I know *slaps self* :( .

Important note for users of the free version of AdRotate:

If your ads have many schedules. Those adverts may show up as expired. This is because the free version does not take schedules in account. So if there are schedules starting at a later date. In AdRotate Pro and previous versions the advert was “healthy” and would just function. With AdRotate not looking at that and not having a schedule for right now the ad will show up as expired.

The best remedy, and to maintain the schedules, is to upgrade to AdRotate Pro. If you do not want that you have to edit and save each advert. This will remove the unused schedules.

Download:

AdRotate Pro users can download version 3.8.1 from their account.

Free users can download AdRotate here.

AdRotate Pro active on the first “Live” site.

Oh yes… I’ve upgraded AdRotate Pro version 3.8 on http://meandmymac.net to see how that went. Almost flawless :) Yay.

This experiment helps me figure out the proper procedure for upgrading and any cave-ats you might run into when upgrading yourself. AdRotate Pro is as good as finished now and final testing is well under way.
