All pages are now up-to-date with current features and description. Hopefully this will make it easier to use these features.

All other new features and bugfixes from 3.8.6 remain in place.

Translators – There are a crap ton of new phrases and words. Also a whole bunch are obsolete. So update your translations. Don’t forget to send in your translations once you have updated them.

What does this mean for you? Time to shake up your sales pages and get some new advertisement packages going.

Publishers:

You can now sell adverts for specific areas. As wide as a country (or selection of countries). Or a series of cities.
No longer does your Long Beach coffee shop advert have to show up globally. You can fine-tune all of this. You can sell per city or general region.

As you can see in the screenshots, it IS very easy to use. Type in a bunch of cities OR select a bunch of countries. And that’s about it. On top of that there is the option to allow your advertisers to use this option as well, if you allow them to make their own adverts.

Advertisers:

Target your locale with more precise adverts. If your shop/business/endeavor is for Japan only. You can target that country. Or a few cities in Japan. It’s all possible now. If the admin permits you, you can create your own localization by selecting countries or cities.

The power of geoPlugin and MaxMind:

AdRotate always had a reliable way of getting a users IP address. This strength is now turned into a super-power by matching that IP against the excellent database of geoPlugin. geoPlugin uses some data from MaxMind – the popular and renowned IP database specifically for targeting specific audiences.

Thanks to Jack T. from bullettmedia.com who suggested I use geoPlugin. geoPlugin which is a free-ish service provides a basic package for free for anyone willing to register. Of course if you like what they do and you want to help them out make a donation via Paypal or upgrade your account to a premium package. Check out their website for more information.

My thoughts:

1. GeoTargeting should be limited to cities and countries. Where Cities take priority over the country selection.
This means that you can specify one or a series of cities to display your ad in. But rules out mistakes of showing ads for cities that aren’t in a specific country.
2. Your site should use a member only GeoLocation service and not a public database. You will need to register your domain for GeoLocation with the GeoPlugin database or GeoTargeting will not work.
3. Implementing this feature may not be useful at group level after-all.

After some trying and experimenting it may be beneficial to determine per ad where it should show. And have that as an additional filter for groups. This instead of putting the location in the group directly.
This will allow people to put 10 ads, one for each city or country, in the same group and use that one group in their setup. Otherwise a whole lot of complex theme mods will have to be developed to make multiple groups work. Which, if you think about it, makes little sense.

How will this impact things; not too much. Ads will gain some more options to determine in which area they belong. Groups will get a checkbox to use GeoTargeting or not. Or something along those lines.

Your thoughts?

How would you want to see GeoTargeting implemented? On a per ad basis? Or per group? Which options would you expect from such a feature? And why? Let me know in the comments! All input is valued, considered and perhaps used.

Keep in mind that this feature has great impact on how your adverts will be visible to your visitors. And how you would like to control that visibility.

The error in question is a duplicate entry error for the statistics AdRotate keeps and essentially means that the database is “full”.
The solution is rather simple and can be applied from PHPMyAdmin to raise the capacity in only a few minutes.

I have discovered this problem a while ago based on feedback from some users and created detailed page for users to resolve it. Due to the nature of the Query you need to run I do *not* want this in the automated upgrade process. So you have to make the change yourself.

If you run into the error;

WordPress database error Duplicate entry '16777215' for key 'PRIMARY' for query INSERT INTO wp_adrotate_tracker (ipaddress,timer,bannerid,stat,useragent) VALUES ('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx','1358187611','59','i','')

(or something very similar)
You can find this in your servers “error_log” file through your hosting providers dashboard.
