As this feature matures more and more into AdRotate there are, and have been, numerous tweaks and improvements made and will be made until it’s “finished”. Lot’s of these changes have been made based on user feedback and tips/suggestions from interested users.
Recently some users discovered that their Geo Requests did not work at all because of a common server limitation. So AdRotate 3.8.10 moved to a more compatible model of making those requests. This is a basic implementation and will be expanded on for the next release. Adding a proper error displaying mechanic for example. And Errors may occur if you go over the limit of 10000 requests per hour.
I have just finished a simple mechanic using WordPress APIs to better handle errors, should they occur. During development of this I also found something odd where geoPlugin forbids commercial use of their services without their consent. Repeated attempts to get in contact with them have been ignored. Sadly. Other users who contacted them for help have been mostly unanswered, too.
AdRotate 3.8.11 will no longer include support for geoPlugin. This eliminates conflicts on both ends.
Freegeoip will be the only option then. Which has a higher request limit and generally seems to work faster too.
I know a bunch of you want support for States, this is an area of interest but until I can find/figure out a reliable way of detecting states (Regions) on a larger scale than the USA that will not be added. So far I have been unsuccessful.
If you have comments, ideas, questions or anything about Geo Location. Some feature or tweak you’d like to see. Let me know. If useful, your idea may be used in the next, or near future, version of AdRotate Pro.
